Neither Steve nor I have any kind of medical background. When I was diagnosed
with diabetes in 1994, and then became insulin dependent in 2000, we were as
lost as anyone. Doctors speak in their own language, and to be fair, they have
to. When someone is describing a medical condition they need to use precise
terms and each of us that are afflicted with a medical condition then need to
become familiar with what those terms mean. Only through understanding can we
participate in our own care and the care of those we love.

Diabetic Retinopathy |
An eye disease that degrades the retina and can cause decreased
vision and blindness. There is always hope for a new treatment for
diabetic retinopathy once the disease develops, but the best thing to do
is to maintain control of blood sugar and have regular eye exams because
the condition is usually preventable. |
