Wired internet connection cable type?
Hi. I am going to be setting up a wired internet connection. The moden will be downstairs, and the computer in the loft. To my understanding, I would need a Network Interface Card with an ethernet port on it, and then I would get a long ethernet cable and plug it into the ethernet port on the computer, and into the modem downstairs.
Then bingo, I have an internet connection on my PC? That easy right?
Also where can I buy ethernet cable?
a neater way would be to use powerline adapters, these use mains wiring instead of a long ethernet cable. You plug a powerline adapter into one of the ethernet ports on the router and into a local mains socket and another adapter into your computer ethernet port and a nearby mains socket.
Unless your PC is extremely old most will have an ethernet port anyway so you will not need a NIC. Speeds are better than wifi and signals can be encrypted so your neighbour cannot hack in if they have powerline adapters
